October, 2001

Being from the West Coast, I don’t have the same type of stories as those who lived and worked near to Ground Zero on 9/11. I do have “a 9/11” story, and it’s time to commit it to text. I’ve told it many times and I THOUGHT I had blogged about it, but I guess I was incorrect…

I made my first trip to New York City to work as a Pro Domme back in 2000. Times were certainly different back then! It wasn’t like I could just find a Mistress on social media who advertised a rental space, and set things up for a visit. Nope. There was this thing called vetting. Yes, I’m going to be making a lot of “back in my day” references in this post. Get used to it. I had to research NYC Dominas in DDI (yes, there used to be these things called magazines where we had to place print ads–IMAGINE THAT!). There was a budding website that featured a Domme Directory (maxfisch), but it was still very new. I ended up contacting Mistress Avalon and supplicating myself to her. We used to have to show deference to our Domme Elders. I had to prove to her that I was a valid Domina and that I had a skill set. She didn’t really care about my silly website. She wanted verification that I was a card-carrying member of the DDI Advertisers Club. What I mean by this it was an indication that I understood how to place a print ad in the publication. I think she might have even asked if I had been in more than one edition (they were published quarterly). It was a measure of validation. I totally understand her point of view now. At the time it was frustrating.

My first trip was quite successful and I decided that even though L’Oeil Cache was magnificently equipped, I didn’t want to bow to Mistress Avalon anymore. I sought out a different rental experience.

I ended up negotiating with Mistress Nadine to use her space for my October 2001 visit. She was very down to earth and didn’t treat me like an underling. I booked my airfare and hotel and thought that everything was set. Then it wasn’t.

The morning of 9/11 I found out about the first tower being hit via the radio. The alarm had gone off and that’s how I heard the news. Of course I ran to the television and turned it on to see exactly what was going on. The second tower collapsing is what I saw. If you weren’t alive then, it was something unforgettable to see the massive loss of life on your tv screen. There was nothing you could do but watch in horror.

Like I mentioned at the beginning, I lived in California in the SF Bay Area. I didn’t have any connections to people who lived or worked in Manhattan. I did what everyone else in my area did for the next few days: I listened to the news, read newspapers and generally felt numb about the whole situation.

As time passed, I started to think about my trip that was booked for the latter portion of October. Should I cancel it? COULD I still go? Eventually I made the decision that I would still travel and that this would be important “some day.” Boy was I correct!

Mistress Nadine was very cool about the entire situation. Her space was in Soho and still accessible. We agreed that we should do “something” while I was there to try to aid in the general situation of the 9/11 aftermath. I didn’t know what this was until I arrived though.

She told me that we’d donate a portion of the proceeds of our sessions during my stay to the local firehouse that was in her neighborhood. She knew people there and they were aware of what she did as a Domina. We would present them with a check and commemorate the occasion with a photo-op.

Not gonna lie, my entire trip was surreal: From my airport experience, to 5th Avenue being entirely empty at night. It was bizarre to visit such a teeming metropolis and see very few people out and about. I stayed at the Hilton in Mid-town. A large number of First Responders were staying there as well.

My sessions went well. I had very few cancellations. Clients wanted a distraction and I did as well! I utilized the proximity to Ground Zero to walk to Lower Manhattan to attempt to see what I could see. So happy I had my camera with me. I will never forget “the smell.” It made the acrid wildfire smoke I have grown used to almost seem pleasant.

Now I find myself returning to New York City, twenty years later. We are in another disaster of sorts, and divided unlike I ever thought we could be. Fortunately, kink unites me and my clients with an unwavering desire to experience our form of reality. The need to submit to the will of a power Domina will never die. I am thankful for this constant in my life.

It will be good to return to New York City after almost a two year absence. I am grateful for colleagues such as Mistress Ariana Chevalier and Mistress Chloe. Now “we” are the ones who are the Domme Elders. Thank you two for providing me a home away from home for so many years now!

9/11 Then and Now

A Tribute To The NYC Rubber Studio

It was with great sadness and a heavy heart that I learned of the imminent closure of a New York BDSM institution. I had hoped that the studio could make it through the pandemic. It can not.

I remember when I first learned of Mistress Ariana’s space. I had been utilizing Sterling LaVey’s location in Chelsea for a few years during my annual visits. When she announced the closure of her studio, I inquired about other options in Manhattan. It was a tenuous time in New York City as a legal crackdown had closed a number of large Houses of Domination. Madame LaVey informed me that Mistress Ariana would NOT rent to me because she didn’t know me. I took her work as the truth and never reached out. It was an early lesson in don’t believe everything you hear…

I soon stopped traveling to New York as the economic downturn of 2008 made all but my international trips feasible. As time went on, I began to face my own economic situation in San Francisco. The new Tech Economy was driving commercial rents up higher and higher. I didn’t want to think of closing my studio, but I knew it might become a reality sooner rather than later. In anticipation of a Plan B, I started to travel more often. I figured that maintaining clients in other states and countries would be a good fall back plan if I didn’t have my own local space.

At the same time as I was making these future plans, I was faced with a stroke of good luck: my best friend from childhood had moved to Brooklyn! She immediately requested that I visit and stay with her while I worked. So now I had a place to say in New York, but where to work? I decided to see if now Mistress Ariana would allow me to rent from her.

She generously accommodated my request to utilize her studio while I was in town. The rest, shall we say, is history. I began to travel to New York twice a year.

What I enjoyed about the New York Rubber Studio was the sense of camaraderie and inclusiveness. I felt “at home.” Mistress Ariana always made sure that my visits went smoothly. She not only provided a space to work, but she also lent an ear. There are things that you simply can’t understand if you haven’t worked as long as we have in this industry. I welcomed her feedback and insight.

The closing of a studio is akin to the shuttering of a house of worship–be it mosque, temple, or church. SM Studios are like consecrated ground to me, because Femdom is the closest thing to a religion I practice these days. The New York Rubber Studio was very much a sacred space. It had a feeling to it of respect and deference. I welcomed that Mistress Ariana made sure to remind her renters of those who had become before them. Just as a priest will chastise an acolyte for not recognizing a bishop. She made me feel like the legend I am by reminding others of the fact. It takes one to know one! And yes, that was a very haughty statement to make, but after 20 plus years in this business, I am allowed.

Thank you to Mistress Ariana for introducing me to your space, your slaves, and clients I will never forget. You have given us all something that money can’t buy: priceless memories of kink at your space. The tales of these times will live on forever.

Last Post Of The Year: Detroit and Belgium

2017 has almost come to an end. I’m not going to reflect on everything that happened, but rather the last two trips of the year. First up: Detroit!

I am thankful to Mistress Mara Mayhem for introducing Detroit as a travel destination in 2017. We made a very successful trip together in April. We immediately planned to return and November was decided as the next logical time to visit. I added Troy on as a side visit, with our final days being spent in downtown Detroit.

Troy SEEMED like such a great idea, but wasn’t. I wasn’t thrilled with my hotel suite, and let’s just say interest was lackluster for my visit. Ultimately, discretion was the biggest issue. It seemed like more clients were paranoid about “being seen” by someone they knew than anything else. While it was amazing to catch up with one of my long-time fans, it ultimately wasn’t worth it. Thus Troy, I won’t be returning. The male creatures there can just make their way to downtown Detroit and be happy that I’m visiting your state.

2017-11-09-18-00-30-e1514495941916.jpgDowntown Detroit was a different story. I simply adore this part of Detroit! How can one not love all of the new construction, renovations, restaurants, etc.? Mistress Mara Mayhem and I had an amazing hotel suite that was perfectly suited for our needs. I WILL chastise the local client population for its booking behavior, though. Male creatures who had contacted me in April, once again waited until the last minute to attempt to see me. I’m not sure what the issue is with planning and BDSM, but figure it the heck out! My erosguide ad is published TWO WEEKS before I arrive at any destination. There are also ample alerts on social media and my website. I had one fan drive up from Indiana to see me. He booked as soon as my trip was announced. THAT is how you do it folks! With that said, I ultimately had a great time with those who did plan and booked to see me.

I met up with my loyal client who takes me on outings in whichever city we meet. We started off the afternoon at a few locations around the downtown area. There were appetizers at Wright and Company and then a glass of wine at the Royce Wine Bar. Next up was a Detroit Pistons game at the new arena. I managed to snap an image of their cheerleaders in hot white boots. There is something about a pair of white boots that will always intrigue me. I have never owned a true pair of stiletto white boots though. It’s not like Satin Jim is going to be calling me up any time soon though…

I’m not going to discuss our dinner destination. It was less than stellar. I believe this was a matter of growing pains on behalf of the restaurant. It’s really not fair to lambast a location early in its existence. Hopefully we will get a chance to try them out again when they are more mature in their offerings.

The view from above San Francisco on my way to Belgium.

My last trip of the year was to Belgium. This is the bi-annual visit I have been making since 2008. This trip was more challenging than others in previous Decembers. Suddenly I had to deal with the consequences of winter weather! I expect rain in Belgium. I had never experienced snow there though. I think that many folks in various parts of the world had forgotten what cold winters were like. The past few years have been mild in the Eastern US and Europe. Not 2017! Luckily the first part of my visit in Central Antwerp was uneventful weather-wise. It was cold but I managed to keep my feet warm with the various foot rests who visited me during my stay.

I returned to my second location for the latter portion of my stay. I have been informed that clients in Belgium are not amenable to Mistresses who blog, so I will not mention her by name. This is unfortunate since I really wish I could laud her fantastic dungeon. Discretion is the better part of valor…

Despite the weather preventing some clients from making their way to see me, I managed to fill up my time in a most productive manner. Video clips, social media and my first show on CamonDemand.com made the cold days pass quickly. Luckily it only rained on my last day so I was able to have a marathon of sessions. I left the country exhausted but totally satisfied.

As for Christmas, it was outstanding as usual. It’s pretty difficult to have a lousy holiday season when I have slaves, fans, and admirers that are attentive and generous. I’m looking forward to 2018 and where my travels will take me next. As usual, check my website regularly for updated city and country dates. When in doubt, just drop me a line via email. I check it often and respond quickly.
